from Lulworth Castle

Nestled in the Cotswolds is the glorious Sudeley Castle and its elaborate Victorian gardens. The Queen's Garden is a nineteenth century parterre bounded by yew hedges and planted with old roses. There is also a chapel garden and a Tithe Barn Garden.

In the tenth century King Ethelred gave his daughter and her bridegroom the manor house of Sudeley as a wedding gift. Their grandson was the first Lord of Sudeley. And for nine hundred years it played an important role in the turbulent history of England.

Queen Katherine Parr was the sixth wife and widow of King Henry VIII. She lived at Sudeley with Thomas Seymour who was Baron of Sudeley Castle. Katherine's reputation was tarnished for marrying Seymour because the king had been dead only three months when she remarried. Katherine died in childbirth some nineteen months after her marriage. She is buried in the castle chapel. The castle provided a refuge for King Charles I and was used as a royalist stronghold during the Civil War.

Walking through the enchanting gardens of Sudeley and viewing the awesome Sudeley Castle is a memorable experience. It is privately owned but the garden and parts of the castle are open for tours.
