Durlston Castle is officially known as Durlston Head Castle and rests on the hill some 215 feet above sea level. The castle was built completely from local stone in 1886. It has been used as a restaurant from the day it was built. Though not a true castle by some definitions, it deserves the name because of its architecture and stature. The sidewall of the castle features a sundial and two stone tablets inscribed with various statistics such as the clock times around the world and the tides. The surrounding area is as interesting to the visitor as the castle, most notable the Great Globe. It is forty ton and ten foot in diameter and made completely from Portland stone. Surrounding the globe is a wall of poetry and interesting statistics. The visitor will also be delighted by the quarry caves and the nearby lighthouse. It is certainly worth a visit. |
