We found Broughty Castle just a few miles from the City of Dundee. It rests on a large rock and offers magnificent views of the river. We walked out on the pier next to the castle to take some of our pictures. It was the perfect location to build a castle. Broughty guards over the estuary of the Firth of Tay. The original castle was completed about 1495. It was a tower house consisting of five stories. Part of this structure remains today though there have been extensive additions over the years. Because of its strategic location, the castle was owned by the War Department from 1851 until 1935 when it was placed in the care of Historic Scotland. However, it was used by the military again from 1939 to 1949 to help with defenses during WWII. The castle currently houses a museum run by the City Council of Dundee. The museum houses exhibits about local history, the whaling industry, weapons and armory. |
