CRATHES CASTLE

We drove through the parkland and up the long driveway to visit Crathes Castle. At first glimpse I immediately thought that this was truly a fairy-tale castle. The elaborate window, the corbelled towers, the gold clock and the proud prancing cock on the weathervane all lend themselves to this vision.

The castle is a sixteenth century tower house. Its construction was completed in 1596 with much decoration on the upper floors. It has five floors with corbelling, bartizans, and turrets adorning the top two levels. The gardens add to the interest of this castle. The luscious yew hedges are meticulously manicured and date from 1702.

The castle stayed in the hands of the Burnet family until 1951 but now is in the care of The National Trust of Scotland. It is located in Banchory near Aberdeen. We enjoyed our visit here and we were amazed at the beautiful yew hedges as much as the castle.
