It was one of those rare days when we were not engaged in our normal pursuit of castle hunting. We were driving down the highway near Maybole on the road from Glasgow. Suddenly on the top of a crest in the hill very near the road our gaze fell upon the remnants of what was once a stately castle. Our research revealed that it was Baltersan castle and that this castle was built in 1584 and that M’Gibbon and Ross’s Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland claims it is a good example of a thoroughly Scottish mansion of the fourth period. There are currently plans to renovate this superior and fashionable home to its former glory. Adding to the intrigue of this wonderful site is that the ruins of Crossraguel Abbey is just 0.8 mile further down the road. It is one of the most complete ruins of Abbeys in Scotland because the visitor can see the whole layout of the old monastery and its related buildings. We have included several pictures taken at this site to give the viewer a good idea of what it is like. |
