DRUM CASTLE

It was late afternoon when we visited Drum Castle so the shadows on our pictures are long. However, they help to reflect the beauty of this lovely castle. Drum Castle is one of the oldest occupied castles in Scotland. The original keep was built in the thirteenth century. There was an addition of a Renaissance mansion in the early seventeenth century and later additions in the Victorian era. All of this constructions blend together to make a wonderful castle structure.

The original walls of the keep were from nine to twelve feet thick which no doubt account for the fact that it is still standing for over six hundred years. This keep is one of the oldest tower houses remaining in Scotland.

Drum Castle is located just 8 miles from Aberdeen. We had a very nice visit there and would recommend it to anyone interested in castles. Thanks to the National Trust for Scotland for keeping it available for viewing.
