DRUMLANRIG CASTLE
We found Drumlanrig Castle situated in the massive 120,000 acres Queensberry Estate near Dumfries. It was an awesome presence as we approached down the lane. It was constructed in the late seventeenth century of local pink sandstone and is built around a courtyard with massive square towers in each corner. The top contains much ornate decoration with the pepper pot turrets being the most outstanding.
We were very impressed with the castle gardens. I am always amazed at the perfection of the geometric designs of some gardens and these gardens are a great example. We wanted to linger and took advantage of one of the benches that were available.
Drumlanrig Castle is privately owned but the castle and grounds are open each year from May through August. We very much enjoyed our visit there.
