DUNURE CASTLE

Late one afternoon we were on the way to a concert with our friends in Scotland. As a treat for us, our friend turned the car from the main road to the Village of Dunure, which is around six miles south of Ayr. It was a lovely surprise when he pulled into Kennedy Park and we saw Dunure castle standing on a cliff alongside the sea.

Dunure Castle was originally constructed before the 13th century built on a rocky outcrop overlooking Ayr Bay. Additions were made to the castle in the 15th and 16th centuries. This castle is said to be the birthplace of the Scottish Kennedys.

This castle was where Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis had the Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey roasted over a fire until he signed over the Abbey lands. The earl was later forced to give the commendator a pension, but he was able to keep the lands.

If you are ever in the vicinity of Dunure be sure to stop by Kennedy Park to view these lovely ruins.
