INVERGARRY CASTLE

We had the wonderful idea to drive around Loch Ness knowing that Invergarry Castle was located near the southern end. It is around seven miles from Fort Augustus on a narrow one-lane road and was quite a challenge for us to find. We had pinpointed it to be in a certain area but we drove back and forth on the highway three or four times before we decided to take an unmarked lane that finally led past the castle.

We found Invergarry Castle to be a dangerous ruin, such that we could not get close enough to explore. It is impressive in its solitude and we wondered about the history that must have occurred here when it was a thriving castle.

The castle is a large tower house built in the early 1600s. Four of the five stories of the castle remain today. It was destroyed by fire in 1746 and never restored. It is amazing that the shell has managed to stand so long.

We managed to take some pictures from outside the fence that surrounds the castle. We present them below for your viewing.
