Stirling Castle is as awesome as it is beautiful. It sits high on the rocky crag of an extinct volcano. It dominates the countryside and we caught sight of it from the highway several minutes before we drove into the city of Stirling in Stirlingshire, Scotland. Stirling is one of the most important and powerful castles in Scotland. The evidence proves that a fortification was here since the early twelfth century, but there are legends that speak of strongholds prior to that time. Some parts of the current structure dates back to the twelfth century. The castle as it exists today was built during various times through the centuries with much of it dating from the middle ages. Much history rests inside the walls of Stirling Castle. It has been the scene of war and battles for it is recorded that it was attacked or besieged at least sixteen times. Many Scottish Kings and Queens have touched this castle with baptisms, coronations, murders and death. Most notable it was a childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots and her coronation took place in the chapel. We spent hours visiting and exploring this castle. It would be easy to spend an entire day and more. It is currently in the care of Historic Scotland and it would be a wonderful place for anyone to visit. |
