from Lulworth Castle

Strathaven Castle rests on a high mound in the center of the burgh of the historic market town of Strathaven.

The first castle was believed to have been built here around 1350. Unfortunately that castle was burned down just 100 years later in the 1450's. Within a few years the castle was rebuilt. The Bairds, the Sinclairs and then the Douglases held the lands here, however King James acquired the castle after he defeated the Douglases in 1455. There were several occupants of the castle after that event until it was finally abandoned in 1717.

There is a legend that the wife of a cruel lord greatly displeased her husband. Nothing is known of her crime. But it is claimed that she was led into a small room in the castle wall, blessed by a priest, given some food, and the wall was bricked up forever. Many years later, when the wall collapsed, human bones were found.

The castle is accessible at all times for those who would like to visit.
