from Lulworth Castle

What remains of Swansea Castle today is just a small fraction of the original huge structure that sprawled through a good part of the city. It appears to have developed into a self-contained castle in the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. The ancient ruins that exist today were called 'The new Castle' when they were built.

Research into the history of the castle reveals more history about the town and the people who settled there than you can imagine. Starting with the town being a home for Scandinavian traders, to the invasion of the Normans, the many uprisings of the Welsh people and more recently the three nights of the Blitz during World War II which destroyed most of the town center. Swansea Castle was one of the structures left standing after the bombing.

The view of the ancient ruins reflected in the glass windows of a modern tower can be seen today. The contrast is extremely thought provoking.
